“Stiff”, “Radiating”, “Sharp” or even “a Cinque”. These are just several of the ways I have heard people describe their neck pain.
Neck pain can seriously affect your sleep quality, effectiveness at work, and enjoyment of physical activities and hobbies. It can even make everyday tasks like driving seem challenging and painful.
There’s no obvious reason why it happened – but it doesn’t seem to be improving!
If that’s happening to you, you’re not alone – and we hear this all the time.
In fact, Neck Pain is THE most common problem that we see in our Physical Therapy Clinic in the Madison Area YMCA in beautiful Madison, NJ.
If You’re Currently Living With Neck Pain
You May Be Wondering What Can Cause It To Flare Up?
Poor Posture While Working At The Computer
The most common culprit for neck pain is having poor posture. Most often this is when you are looking down at a computer while working. With many people working from home recently, we have seen a large increase in neck pain.
Sleeping In A Bad Position
Another common cause of flaring up neck pain is sleeping in a position that compresses your spine. Everyone should be sleeping in a position where your neck and head are aligned with your body. A lot of positions like side and stomach sleeping can cause your neck and head to not be aligned causing neck pain.
Heavy Lifting
Unfortunately, a very common thing we see when we work with someone on their exercise plan is that they tend to improperly lift weights. If you are going to lift heavy weights while suffering from neck pain, you must make sure you have the proper form (Neutral Spine). It is very common for neck pain to happen, especially with core exercises because a lot of people use their necks to lift rather than engaging their core.
Emotional Stress
Emotional stress is a very common cause of neck pain. When someone with neck pain comes in to see us, a lot of the time they are heavily stressed about making sure their children are taken care of. Carrying the stress in your neck is common, unfortunately.
